Elitists don't live in the same mindset than normal people watching Friends re-runs. They elevate themselves over anyone they see fit to be a lower class.
I actually wrote some concerns of the rise of elitism on my thesis about black metal and its connections to satanism. Elitism is the sin of our times. It's the radical revolution of modern satanism. There is no such thing as good or evil for these people, just ask Dick Cheney.
